Mercy Thompson is back in this new addition to the popular series。 As always, life is always an adventure for Mercy and Adam。 Not only do they have a door to the fae underhill in their back yard, a vampire stalker who seems to be fixated on Mercy, and a pack to run, but now they have to deal with a missing Wulfe, a frightening monster The Harvester terrorizing the community, and maintaining their position and trust with the rest of the supernatural world。 I will admit right now, I am a big fan o Mercy Thompson is back in this new addition to the popular series。 As always, life is always an adventure for Mercy and Adam。 Not only do they have a door to the fae underhill in their back yard, a vampire stalker who seems to be fixated on Mercy, and a pack to run, but now they have to deal with a missing Wulfe, a frightening monster The Harvester terrorizing the community, and maintaining their position and trust with the rest of the supernatural world。 I will admit right now, I am a big fan of the series。 It's a re-read for me。 That being said, I was a bit on the fence about the last book in the series。 It felt transitionary to me and left a lot of questions out there。 I can't say that about this book at all。Soul Taken is a wonderful addition to the series。 Readers get more information on Sherwood and Wulfe。 Some of the questions about these characters are answered while leaving an uncertainty as to their role in the rest of the series。 The book also has plenty of action and a strong mystery element。 Briggs did a wonderful job of creating tension and twists。 It makes for a fast read engaging read。 Overall, one of my favorite books in the series。 It makes me want to read the books all over again (and again!)Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC and the opportunity to read and review Soul Taken by Patricia Briggs。 。。。more

Wulfe broken, Adam badly bentThe invasion of Mercy and Adam's territory by the Hardesty witches in Storm Cursed left a lot of damage behind。 We are still dealing with much of that。Wulfe is someone we've known from the very beginning of Mercy Thompson's story。 He's a vampire, second in Marsilia's seethe。 He's quite possibly the most dangerous vampire in the Columbia Basin, or even North America。 He looks like a teenage boy because that's what he was when he was made a vampire, but in fact he's ve Wulfe broken, Adam badly bentThe invasion of Mercy and Adam's territory by the Hardesty witches in Storm Cursed left a lot of damage behind。 We are still dealing with much of that。Wulfe is someone we've known from the very beginning of Mercy Thompson's story。 He's a vampire, second in Marsilia's seethe。 He's quite possibly the most dangerous vampire in the Columbia Basin, or even North America。 He looks like a teenage boy because that's what he was when he was made a vampire, but in fact he's very old。 We know that he made the European vampire lord Bonarata, although Bonarata later managed to shake him off and is no longer under Wulfe's control。 In Storm Cursed Wulfe hinted that he is both a White Witch and a Wizard。 What makes him especially scary is that he appears to be insane。 I say "appears to be" because it's never been clear to me whether Wulfe is actually crazy, or merely strategically faking it。 Mercy can see, talk to, and sometimes command the dead。 Vampires exist in a semantically awkward dead but not-quite dead state。 They walk around and fight, and they can be killed, or at least destroyed。 In the final battle of Storm Cursed Mercy and her allies were beset by an army of hundreds of zombies controlled by the Hardesty witches。 Mercy fought back by gathering the life-threads of all the dead on the battlefield and releasing them, thus neatly disposing of the zombies。 But she inadvertently released something in Wulfe in the act。 Wulfe was in the battle, fighting on Mercy and Adam's side。Wulfe is not dead (well, he IS dead -- he's a vampire! but not destroyed), but something is broken in him。 When we last saw him in Smoke Bitten he was mooning around Adam's house, stalking Mercy。 Adam also took damage in that battle。 He killed his colleague Elizaveta Arkadyevna, the witch who had worked with Adam for years, because she had betrayed him by going black。 In her last moments Elizaveta laid her death curse on Adam。 In Smoke Bitten we saw what that looks like -- Adam now turns into a gigantic hairy monster。 Unlike his wolf, the monster is not fully under Adam's rational control。 It is connected with his self-doubt -- his perception that he himself is a monster who ruins the lives of those around him。 We all have moments of doubt, but mostly we don't turn into ten-foot tall violent hairy monsters in those moments。 (Well, I don't know about you, but *I* don't。 I'm pretty sure。 Though to be completely accurate, I don't usually check the mirror in my moments of doubt。)So now Wulfe has disappeared and bodies are beginning to pile up -- why? Mercy sets out to find Wulfe。 。。。more

Patricia Briggs has absolutely NAILED IT with this latest installment of the Mercy Thompson series。 Questions are answered, sex is had, we find out which is Adam's favourite tie (SPOILER ALERT: those two are connected) and the bad guy is possibly the scariest yet。 I won't say more because if you already know this series, you can simply trust me when I say, it's fantastic, and if you're just getting into the series, you should read faster because you are going to want to get to this one。 Go, read Patricia Briggs has absolutely NAILED IT with this latest installment of the Mercy Thompson series。 Questions are answered, sex is had, we find out which is Adam's favourite tie (SPOILER ALERT: those two are connected) and the bad guy is possibly the scariest yet。 I won't say more because if you already know this series, you can simply trust me when I say, it's fantastic, and if you're just getting into the series, you should read faster because you are going to want to get to this one。 Go, read, now。 。。。more

4。5 starsI have been waiting very impatiently for Wulfe’s backstory, which FINALLY gets explored in this book。 The plot revolves around a series of murders of people with minor magics that seem to be carried out by a character from a recently released film who wields a cursed sickle。 There’s nothing fictional about the killings, though, and Mercy, Adam, and the pack get pulled into investigating the deaths。 At the same time, they are told that Wulfe is missing and that they must find him。 Are th 4。5 starsI have been waiting very impatiently for Wulfe’s backstory, which FINALLY gets explored in this book。 The plot revolves around a series of murders of people with minor magics that seem to be carried out by a character from a recently released film who wields a cursed sickle。 There’s nothing fictional about the killings, though, and Mercy, Adam, and the pack get pulled into investigating the deaths。 At the same time, they are told that Wulfe is missing and that they must find him。 Are the murders and Wulfe’s disappearance connected? If so, how? And what is the source of the weird magic Mercy encounters during a run-in with some mysterious fae? Because of Wulfe’s central role in the plot, Mercy finally gets insight into his history and his connection with the vampires of the Tri-Cities seethe。 As I expected, his story is terrible and sad; it also explains why the other vampires are willing to put up with him。 Maybe I’m not supposed to have empathy for a violently crazy vampire, but I can’t help hoping that Mercy will eventually be able to help Wulfe find some sort of peace。 Preferably a peace that doesn’t involve his death。 The pace of the story is a little slow at the beginning, but it picks up as the book continues。 The plot is more complicated than it initially appears, with several different antagonists targeting Mercy。 Although she manages to overcome them all, the book ends on an ominous note, with threats from a bitter enemy and the possibility of danger from someone much closer to her。 Based on the author’s website, we’ll get to find out what happens next sometime in 2023。 It’s going to be hard for me to wait that long! A copy of this book was provided through NetGalley for review; all opinions expressed are my own。 。。。more

Thanks to the publisher, via Netgalley, for an advance e-galley for honest review。This is the only fantasy series of any kind I keep up with, and I'm never disappointed by the stories Patricia Briggs brings to readers。 The first third or so of the book was a bit slow moving for me, but once the story gets established it picked up quite a bit and was engaging。 Despite being 13 books in, every book feels creative and introduces new, different threats and changes that affect Mercy, Adam, the pack, Thanks to the publisher, via Netgalley, for an advance e-galley for honest review。This is the only fantasy series of any kind I keep up with, and I'm never disappointed by the stories Patricia Briggs brings to readers。 The first third or so of the book was a bit slow moving for me, but once the story gets established it picked up quite a bit and was engaging。 Despite being 13 books in, every book feels creative and introduces new, different threats and changes that affect Mercy, Adam, the pack, and their community。 (Don't read this series out of order, there is consistent world building along the way that's essential to the stories)。 。。。more

Solid story that sets up the next book arc。 Enjoyed the new backstory info on Wulfe。 However the first half of the book is a lot of referencing past books to catch the read up。 I think at this point in a series readers don’t need that much catch up info。 It slows down an enjoyable plot to constantly read references to what happened six books ago。 Trust the reader to remember or reread if they don’t。

So, back to the start, we are forced to acknowledge some changes in the pack that ends up putting the higher ranking pack members in the front row of some weirdo vampire nonsense。 The line here is that Wulfe is missing and because he's been stalking Mercy, maybe she killed him? Seems very loosely thought through from the vampires, but there's games within games here。Before they even begin to unpack to the vampire drama, there's also mysterious murders happening that end up involving the fae。 We get our usual suspects together for some deliciously nostalgic crime fighting that had me so happy the gang was back together。 Adam and Mercy, also, were simply amazing in this book。 The way they balance one another out was a joy to see。 With so many traps, bad decisions, and rules to navigate, Mercy was really the hero in this one。 I am absolutely back in and can't wait to see the next one come out。 。。。more

I am a biased reviewer because I love everything mercy thompson。 It could be plot free and just be a week in the life of the pack, and I’d love it。I did especially love how vulnerable mercy was emotionally in this book, and I loved Wulfe。

(Wulfe! Sherwood! Zee!) I kept squeeing to my partner about them but he'd just smile and nod since he had no idea what I was talking about。 Speaking of which, you definitely have to read the other books in the series first before getting to this one。 The personal dynamics won't work if you try to read it as a standalone。 I absolutely love watching several of the relationships in this series grow and become stronger。Also I need to talk about how gorgeous the cover is! The crescent moon in the background echoing the shape of the scythe is perfection。 Dan dos Santos is a phenomenal artist。 I think this is my favorite cover from the whole series。CW: stalking, violence, spiders, guns Special thanks to Ace Books, Berkley Publishing Group, Penguin Random House, and NetGalley for providing a digital ARC of this book for me to review。 All opinions contained herein are my own。 Soul Taken releases on Tuesday, August 23rd。If you want to see more from me, check out my blog and my bookstagram! 。。。more

Loved the new installment of the Mercyverse! I usually listen to the audiobook, but received an ARC from #Netgalley and #Berkley Publishing。A mystery from 40 years before has resurfaced and it is up to Mercy, Adam, and the pack as well Larry and Zee。 Lesser supernaturals are disappearing, but when members of the Seethe can't be found then Mercy and Adam investigate。 I don't think we saw as much of the pack as normal。 This tended to be more of an Adam and Mercy book。 Still loved it and you do fin Loved the new installment of the Mercyverse! The whackjob crazy vampire/witch, Wulfe has been stalking Mercy in his very special creepy way for some time now。 When Wufle goes missing, Mercy, Adam, and the pack are warned in bizarre way by Marsilia that if they do not find him, dire consequences will ensue for all of the supernatural community they have been protecting since the break with the Marrok。 Not only has Wulfe disappeared, but with the help of the Goblin King, Larry, they discover low level magic users who moved to the Tri-Cities The whackjob crazy vampire/witch, Wulfe has been stalking Mercy in his very special creepy way for some time now。 When Wufle goes missing, Mercy, Adam, and the pack are warned in bizarre way by Marsilia that if they do not find him, dire consequences will ensue for all of the supernatural community they have been protecting since the break with the Marrok。 Not only has Wulfe disappeared, but with the help of the Goblin King, Larry, they discover low level magic users who moved to the Tri-Cities for protection have also gone missing。 And for those who have been anxiously waiting to know, Sherwood Post’s identity is finally revealed。Because of her bond with Stefan and more recently Wulfe, Mercy starts having strange dreams that put her in their minds mostly in with memories of the past, many of them quite unpleasant。 It seems an enemy Mercy thought defeated or at least contained, is back in play causing death and mayhem。 Poor Stefan seems to have turned into a whipping boy at least in the last book and this one。 Zee is an important part of this story too, and his history is also enlarged。 While we all know Zee is many things, nice not being one of them, he does care for Mercy: however, he is very, very dangerous even more so than she previously thought。Adam is still dealing with his scary, bad uber monster self; he feels Mercy is too optimistic that he can control it, and it is not all the wicked witch’s fault。 Adam has always had a dark view of himself that feeds into his creature。 Adam loves Mercy with every fiber of his being so it is hard for him to let her put herself in harm’s way which is something she does so very well。 They have strange supernatural critters to deal with as well as a very deadly sickle that possesses the person wielding it turning them into a true Grim Reaper of the supernatural set。 Warren has gotten his tail in a twist over an issue that he does not want to share, lashing out at Mercy and the pack so it is not surprising that lots of trouble keeps Mercy and company quite busy。 Mercy’s trickster dad, Coyote, shows up to give his brand of “help” in some dire events。 This tale has all the chaos, thanks to Mercy, scary times, and fierce battles readers have come to expect from this series so I think everyone will be quite well pleased 。。。more
